Weekly Round-Up August 27, 2010

by Cheryl Spencer on August 27, 2010

Here are some of the best gardening, cooking and local food related blogs, stories, etc. that I’ve come across this week.

Gardening:

Simply AMAZING photos of flowers taken with X-ray photos.

Water Use and Other Pointed Subjects from Ken Druse’s Real Dirt podcast. Real Dirt is a recent addition to my podcast listening. So far, I’d give the show a thumbs-up. In this edition, he talks to Scott Calhoun, a garden writer versed in dry-climate growing. If you’re interested in some xeric (water-wise) plants that you may not have tried before, this will be worth a listen. (Podcast player is at the bottom of the page). You can also subscribe through i-tunes.

Cooking:

Recipe for Camp Joy Tomato Basil Pasta from LocalHarvest. A season-defining dish.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Wins Emmy I never watched the show myself, but his cause seems noble — to get people to eat healthier, good-tasting food.

Local Food:

The recent salmonella outbreak in eggs probably has you wondering where you can buy safe eggs. Here are some tips for deciphering egg cartons, and here’s some interesting info about the nutrition of eggs from a fellow Grant Farms CSA member.

In a related story about eggs, listen to Lynne Rossetto Kasper’s conversation with food writer Tamar Haspel about an egg tasting she had. The results may surprise you — but maybe not if you’ve eaten local, farm-raised eggs, but also remember what factory-farm eggs taste like. (You can also subscribe to the Splendid Table podcast through i-tunes).
